New York State's Empire Zones Program was created to stimulate economic growth through a variety of State tax incentives designed to attract new businesses to New York State and to enable existing businesses to expand and create more jobs. Currently there are 85 Empire Zones throughout New York State.
New York State's Empire Zones Program was created to stimulate economic growth through a variety of State tax incentives designed to attract new businesses to New York State and to enable existing businesses to expand and create more jobs. Currently there are 85 Empire Zones throughout New York State.
Within Broome County there are two Empire Zones. The Triple Cities Empire Zone, designated on July 27, 1994, and the Broome County/Town of Kirkwood Empire Zone, designated on June 3, 1998. Both are overseen by the same office.
By law, Empire Zones can only be two square miles in size. In total, Broome County has 4 square miles of Empire Zone acreage that covers portions of the City of Binghamton, Town of Kirkwood, Town of Union and the Villages of Endicott and Johnson City. To view the maps, click here.
The majority of incentives available through the Empire Zones Program are credits against New York State tax liability or franchise tax liability. Certified Empire Zone businesses have the opportunity to earn tax credits that will help reduce the cost of doing business in New York State.
